1. Where to start?
There are two important Parts: 1) Greek Root Part, 2) Latin Root Part
Under each section, there are Chapters. After some Chapters, there
will be some Reviews for the Chapters that you learned. You can learn by clicking on
each Chapter.
You can start from Greek Root Part, which are slightly easier than
Latin Root Part, because their meanings are more clearly defined, and straight forward.
For warming up, we recommend you to try:
Some Simple Word Roots - for a Preliminary Warm-up
To get a feel of roots (instead of prefixes or suffixes) yourself, click on Chapter
4 under 'Greek Root Section'
Greek Root Chapter 4
2. How to use the pages?
Click a Chapter, read every root in the chapter, familiarize yourself with the meaning of the root. Under the root, you will almost always find an
example word for the root. For the example word, pay attention to the dissection of it. Then click the link 'Now Repeat my Dissection'
under the dissection. In the dialog box popped up, repeat the dissection of the example word.
3. What are the benefits of using the web pages?
Benefits include:
1) Easy learning of important, and frequently used roots, prefixes, suffixes.
2) Training your eyes to decipher the prefixes, roots, suffixes from an English word, and to dissect the word into its constituent elements.
3) Getting a training opportunity for you to establish a mind set to discern the prefix, root, and suffix from a word, and to truly appreciate the word's meaning from its prefix, root, and suffix.
4. Why are you advised to repeat the dissection of an example word?
Because 'Repetition is the key to learning'. By repeating the dissection, you can train your eyes to discern all the constitutents roots
of the word and get at the true and basic meaning of the word.
5. Can I just browse or read through the roots and their meanings, and skip the repetition of the dissection of the example word under the root?
No. If you skip, you will simply get nothing from this site. Learning and repeating the dissection is the way to establish your habit or mindset of
discerning roots and getting at the true meaning of a word in the future.
6. About how many hours are needed to complete the chapters?
About 30 hours are needed to learn all the regular Chapters (reviews not incuded), which mean you need to complete 2 Chapters in one hour.
The Reviews after every 3 ~ 4 regular Chapters are for you to fix the roots that
you just learned in your mind. Repeating the dissection of the word in Review Chapters is recommended.
