1. Why the web site?
The way we learnt or memorized English words when we were kids was tremendously inefficient. We usually broke an English word down into individual alphabetical characters together with a meaning in our mother tongue language. For example when we were learning the English word visit as a kid we broke it down into:
v - i - s - i - t 访问 (访问 means visit in my native language)
and tried to memorize these five individual characters plus the meaning in our head. We spent hours and finally fixed them in our heads but we still did not know why the word had that meaning of 访问。
And for the words such as phenomenon, philosophy, archaeology etc., we used the same way, and spent a day to imprint each word and its meaning in our minds. This method was inefficient and miserable, and had drowned us many times.
The correct way is to dissect an English word into its constituent root, prefix and suffix. For example for the word visit, we can dissect it into:
visit = vis (see) + it (go)
visit = go to see
Knowing that the root vis and vid mean see allows you to understand many several dozens other words containing vis or vid. Same with the root it (go). This dissection also shows the source of the meaning of go to see for the word visit.

Similarly for phenomenon, the dissection shows where it develops its meaning from:
phenomenon = phen (show, appear) + omen (sign) + -on (a Greek suffix for sigular noun)
phenomenon = the appearance of a sign

And for philosophy
philosophy = phil (love) + o (a connective, no meaning) + soph (wise) + -y (a Greek suffix for abstract noun)
philosophy = the knowledge for the love of wisdom

archaeology = archae (ancient, first) + o (a connective, no meaning) + log (word) + -y (a Greek suffix for abstract noun, -logy = the study of)
archaeology = the study of man's ancient past

This web site shows you that learning English word roots and dissection of words is useful and fun, a good way for you to understand a word's true meaning and its usage, and an efficient way to increase your vocabulary.
